Happy Lohri, everyone! Lohri is the winter bonfire festival in Punjab where everyone celebrates the beginning of the new harvest with music, dancing, food and kite flying! Traditionally, kites in Pakistan and India have a shape that looks like a square on its side, so that’s why I made my kites in that way, instead of the diamond shape that’s more popular in the U.S.

Supplies
So I know it looks like a LOT, but keep in mind that I totally made up this design based on the supplies that I already had at home. If you don’t have any paper punches to use – no worries! You can use small stickers, stamps or just try a design using a thin marker.
Supply List:
- Mini Bow Punch
- Mini Star (Hole) Punch
- Small Star Punch
- Twine
- Cardstock Paper in at least 3 different colors
- Glue Stick or Glue Tape
- Scissors
- Tape
- Ruler
Start by cutting a 1″ by 1″ square in one color and a 2″ by 2″ square in another color.
Cut the smaller 1″ square in half along the diagonal so that you are left with 2 triangles. Line up these triangles on opposite sides of your kite. Then, glue them down leaving a wide gap in between.Next, take your mini star (hole) punch, and punch 4 stars in the middle of that gap, taking care to leave space in the center.
Next, punch out a small star from the same color paper as your triangles, and glue that in the center of your kite.
Now it’s time for your twine. You can use whatever color you like. I wanted my bow and twine color to be anything other than the base color of my kite (lime green) so they would really pop. We are going to make some fringes on the sides of the kite because … why not add a little pizazz to your kite? Start by cutting twine into 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch pieces. Clump 3-4 of these pieces together and tape them to the back of your kite.
Do the same in the opposite corner until your kite looks like this:
Now, cut a 6″ piece of twine and tape it to one of the corners that does not have fringe. This will be your kite tail.
Now it’s time to add a cardstock background to your kite, to hide all of the tape in the back. Adding a vibrant contrasting color to the back of your kite will really make those star punches POP.
Finally, using a bow punch (or drawing a bow with a thin marker), punch out a bow from cardstock and glue it just above your kite tail on the front.
I hope you liked crafting this paper kite with me! I’ve also shared some additional designs below. I used a heart punch, mini hole punch and snowflake punch to make all of these kites.
You might be asking yourself, now that I made this cute little. guy, what can I do with it? Here are some ideas:
- greeting card (see my version below!)
- banner
- kids’ craft
- party supplies – invitations, thank you cards, dessert table decor, food labels.etc.
Please let me know in the comments what you thought of this paper kite craft. As always, keep it crafty…and Happy Lohri!
